The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn. ~John Lubbock
Learning is a magical gift. It can excite, encourage and enhance life in endless ways. It creates a stronger, wiser and more capable individual. Learning does not discriminate. It knows no age, race, religion or socio-economic status. We are all free to explore its vast universe at a moment’s notice, embracing all that it offers. Learning is a gift that lasts a lifetime.
YouthQuest embraces the magic of learning. The process is guided by a system of philosophies and values that continuously evolve for the betterment of those involved. It is a unique solution to an assortment of challenges.
This YouthQuest process is built on the foundation that learning is a shared responsibility between parents, students, staff and community. We understand that all children learn at different rates, and that all students have a unique talent. High expectations should be based on appropriate educational lessons and activities. Instruction should be strategic and reflect a multitude of educational styles.
We believe that student data and interests direct program content and activities. We believe that self-esteem is gained through encouragement, and that students should be praised and rewarded. The curriculum should be relevant, engaging, hands-on, challenging and encourage continued self-awareness. Finally, we believe that honest and sincere relationships are vital.
The development of an effective, caring and committed after school environment is a crucial first step to the success of the YouthQuest process. The culture begins with everyone being respected and valued. It continues with the opinions of all being shared in a way that validates each person’s importance to the process. It is an all-inclusive process, with parents, students and staff having the opportunity to be heard and their ideas acted upon. A positive culture sets the stage for success. With it everything is possible; without it, we will never realize our full potential and the students in our program will lose opportunities to excel academically and socially. It is an environment that must be maintained.
Another important process is the pursuit of improvement. We believe that all YouthQuest staff should identify both immediate and long-term personal and professional areas in which they would like to improve. The same is true with improving after school program performance and student achievement. One student at a time, one step at a time.
The ability to learn does not discriminate. Quality education is a gift that lasts a lifetime.
